Ten Year Anniversary
January is the time of beginnings. "January" itself comes from the
name of the Roman God "Janus". Janus is the god of gates and doorways,
depicted with two faces looking in opposite directions. So I will
imitate the god of doorways and look backward and look forward.
In March of this year Blavatsky Net will be marking its tenth
anniversary. I can hardly believe so much time has passed. Ten years
ago BN began life as a single page. Today if a site has only one page
it is apt to say "under construction". Back then one page was
exciting. That page had a picture of Blavatsky on it. Her image was
flowing in electrons around the world!
Now I have lost count of how many pages there are. The number of pages
is still growing. For example some newly translated pages are
currently in the process of being added to the Russian portion of the
site. And still others are being developed for the English section.
As has just been noticed on the bn-study talk list, that list will be
reaching its 7th anniversary next month. Nor can I imagine the talk
list is that old. With some 800 people receiving email from that list
every day it is very much the most popular Theosophical talk list on
the internet. Thanks to the moderators of the lists on BN for their
day-in and day-out work to make it possible. And now the list is
renewing itself yet again with a conscientious return to the original
teachings.
As for the popularity of the main site at www.blavatsky.net, it is
exceptional. Web statistics show that BN is approximately rated as
120,000. That means it is the 120,000th most visited web site on the
internet. One day last month I happened to notice that BN was rated
as the 108,000th most visited web site on that day. With tens of
millions of web sites, that is extraordinary. This makes BN
distincly the most visited Theosophical web site in the world. Further,
it indicates much interest in this subject in the world as a whole -
perhaps more that some of us generally assume. The popularity of this
site is based on a tradition of providing value that we will strive
to continue.
Oh yes, Janus looked forward. For the future we are hard at work
providing more content and working at more ways to help present the
message of Theosophy to the world. I will be discussing this more as
these efforts reach fruition.
For some parting quotes I have selected some words from Gottried
de Purucker in the introduction to his book "H.P. Blavatsky The
Mystery" published by Point Loma Publications 1974. That book in turn
is a collection of his articles that first appeared some 40 years
earlier in "The Theosophical Path".
But, after all this is said, the fact remains that one of the most
interesting and significant factors in the history of the
Theosophical Society during the lifetime of H. P. Blavatsky, was the
large number of highly reputable, loftily intellectual, and truly
spiritually minded people whom she drew into the membership of the
Theosophical Society. They numbered literally thousands in all parts
of the world. They included philosophers, scientists, clergymen,
statesmen, literary men, men of various other professions, artists,
men of wide and successful commercial experience; in fact an actual
cross-section, cut through the heart of our Occidental social
structure. It is these last who formed the body of devoted,
energetic, and highly intelligent members, who supported with all
the power at their command, the efforts of H. P. Blavatsky to make
her Message to the world a vital power in the hearts and minds of men.
And even among these choice persons, there were very few who had any
conception of a clearly defined character of the real nature and
mission of H. P. Blavatsky; but these few, these choicest of the
choice, intuitive, aspiring, longing for truth, hungering for reality,
and who formed a fifth class themselves - these last were they, we
say, who were in the real sense of the phrase her true pupils and who
gave to her the most invaluable part of the assistance that she then
received in casting her message broadly and deep into men's souls.
They were very few indeed, but the Theosohist of today with the added
experience that time has given can do no otherwise than record his
sense of gratitude to them for their utterly true-heardted loyalty to
H.P. Blavatsky in the days of her first and perhaps greatest efforts.
While even these few did not fully understand their great Teacher, as
was only to be expected, yet they undestood enough of her to realize
that they were in the presence of and working under the inspiration
of one of those World-Figures of which history records the appearance
among men at cyclic intervals.
...
This inner Self of her was one of the Great Ones of the ages, an
actual, real, self-consciously energic Individuality of Power, which
worked through her and used her both psychologically and physically as
the fittest instrument of the saving of the souls of men that the
Occidental world has seen in many ages.
_______
Best wishes to all for a happy, prosperous and insightful new year.
